TEHRAN, June 12 - The fiercely-fought presidential election in Iran commenced officially at 8:00 a.m. local time with an expected record turnout. Voting is to continue until 6:00 p.m., but it is expected to be extended by four hours.
One hour after polling stations opened, voters had already turned out in an unprecedented high numbers. Long queues formed even before the polling stations opened. About 46.2 million Iranians out of a total population of 70.4 million are eligible to vote. There are 45,713 polling stations throughout the country and 304 for Iranians abroad.
In case none of the four candidates receives an absolute majority in the first round of voting, a run-off would be held June 19 between the two candidates with the most votes.
The four presidential candidates are incumbent President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and three challengers, Mir-Hossein Mousavi, Mahdi Karroubi, and Mohsen Rezaii.
