QASHQAVI : IRAN TO HOST LARGEST NAM GATHERING IN 2012 | |||
(Hamsayeh.Net) - Hassan Qashqavi, Iran's Foreign Ministry Spokesman, said the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), which consists of 118 nations, holds a special and important place in the world, today. He said Iran is ready to host one of the largest political summits in the world arena in 2012 to invite the heads of NAM as well as 120 guests observers from various nations. Qashqavi said the NAM is in fact the most important and powerful establishment in the world after the UN and the UN General Assembly. He praised the decision making process in the NAM as a system that is based on consensus on different issues amongst its members. 'The Non- Aligned Movement sessions enable exchanging views by all the members in a coherent and constructive way,' Iranian FM Spokesman notes.
The Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) is an international organization of states considering themselves not formally aligned with or against any major power bloc. The movement is largely the brainchild of India's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, former president of Egypt Jamal Abdul Nasser and Yugoslav president Josip Broz Tito. It was founded in April 1955; as of 2009, it has 118 members. The purpose of the organization as stated in the Havana Declaration of 1979 is to ensure "the national independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity and security of non-aligned countries" in their "struggle against imperialism, colonialism, neo-colonialism, racism, and all forms of foreign aggression, occupation, domination, interference or hegemony as well as against great power and bloc politics."They represent nearly two-thirds of the United Nations' members and comprise 55 percent of the world population, particularly countries considered to be developing or part of the third world.
