According to IRNA, the Deputy Foreign Minister for international and legal affairs Mohammad Ali Hosseini said Iran's role in the NAM has been very important and the country was an active member since 1979 when it actually joined the organization. Iran has been involved in drawing NAM's policies and strategies in cooperation with other members on proactive basis.
He recalled that during the last summit in Havana, Cuba, in 2006 when Iran proposed to host the 16th summit in Tehran. NAM later approved the proposal that showed Iran's positive role within the organization and its capacity to hold important events.
Citing the NAM's decision as a direct challenge to western propaganda against Iran, Hosseini said such a decision in fact reveals world's reaction against negative campaigns against Iran in the international arena.
The Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) comprises of 118 developing countries thus making it the largest global international political organization.
