Tegucigalpa, Honduras - Undeterred by the savage repression of a labor-led demonstration on 30 July, thousands of Hondurans again poured into the streets of Tegucigalpa to demand the restoration of democracy and constitutional law.
They were joined by Xiomara Castro, wife of Manuel Zelaya, the exiled President of Honduras. Castro praised the demonstrators for their courage in maintaining a continous peaceful struggle for 34 days since the coup.
It has just been reported that Roger Vallejo Soriano, the 38-year-old teacher shot in the head by the police during the 30 July march, died of his wound on the morning of 1 August.
The U.S. government, while condemning the coup, has taken only symbolic measures to isolate its perpetrators. There is no doubt that the Honduran military and police could not continue their repression of the massive non-violent resistance if they received a clear signal from Washington that this behavior would no longer be tolerated.
