Missile Shield in Europe Threatens Russia's Deterrent

We will not accept a state of affairs when a missile defense system poses a threat to Russia's nuclear deterrence potential: Lavrov.

March 11, 2010 (Hamsayeh.Net) - Russian official dismissed words of assurances uttered by the US military planners over peacefulness of the proposed anti-missile shield systems in Europe.

The country’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Wednesday reminded the US that Moscow could not allow planned missile-shield elements in Eastern Europe to simply threaten Russia’s nuclear deterrent, as reported by Ria Novosti.

‘The U.S. administration says its global missile shield program is not directed against Russia. However, our conclusions on the true potential of the future missile defense system should be based on specific military and technical factors, not on words,’ Lavrov said.  ‘We will not accept a state of affairs when a missile defense system poses a threat to Russia's nuclear deterrence potential,’ he added.

The US, as of late, has been working on multiple scenarios to increase the number of its so-called anti missile shields all around Russia as a way to exert on again-off again political pressures on Moscow during peace time. Moscow has called on the US to finalize an arms reduction treaty that should benefit both parties and also the entire world. But consecutive US administrations always come up with some security novelties just before the talks begin.

These days the US is in talks with Romania and Bulgaria for the deployment of anti missile batteries in those territories. Washington also seeks missile deployments in the Baltic Sea overlooking Russia’s northern regions.

According to military experts it would still require years before such missile system could be able to hit a Russian inter-continental ballistic missile. Also, Moscow has developed a new generation of inter-continental ballistic missiles known as Iskander, that are virtually invisible to any advanced radar systems. Last month Russia’s Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov reminded that Moscow could deploy the Iskander missile systems on its territory in the Baltic region.
