New Japanese Prime Minister Tries to Quell Anger Surrounding US Airbase

In the past there have been many instances of US soldiers raping young schoolgirls in the area.

June 23, 2010 (Hamsayeh.Net) - New Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan who took over from vastly unpopular Yukio Hatoyama earlier this month, like his predecessor, is trying to whitewash the scandal surrounding his government’s inability to relocate a controversial US airbase from the Okinawa Island.

People in Japan are quite sensitive about their politicians using lies that jeopardize the country’s democratic establishment. A vast Majority of Okinawans had voted for a speedy removal of this controversial US airbase called  Futenma from the Island. The base houses more than 20,000 US Army personnel and is a major cause of pollution, noise and criminal activities. In the past there have been many instances of US soldiers raping young schoolgirls in the area.

The former Japanese prime minister had promised the people to remove the airbase from the island without delay, but it turned out that he was incapable of fulfilling his promises. For this reason he felt awfully ashamed subsequently leading to his resignation from the post.

Naoto Kan during his first visit to the Island said, ‘I want to express my gratitude for the fact that this burden contributes to the peace and security of the Asia-Pacific region.’ He tried to reassure the residents that their wishes may be fulfilled sometime in the future, ‘I promise to seriously try all the more to reduce Okinawa's burden related to the U.S. bases and eliminate the associated dangers.’

There’re substantiated reports that indicate the US had conducted the operation aimed at raising tensions in that region by blowing up a South Korean military ship called Cheonan in the Yellow Sea. Both Washington and Seoul later blamed a North Korean-fired torpedo for the sinking of Cheonan. Pyongyang denied any involvements in that incident.

Following the incident the Japanese government quickly reversed its decision of relocating the airbase from Okinawa, citing growing tensions with North Korea.
