Obama Chided China Over its Refusal to Blame North Korea

China’s shying away from the harsh facts about North Korea's behaviour was a bad habit we need to break: Obama

June 28, 2010 (Hamsayeh.Net) - In an unrelated move during the G20 economic summit in Toronto, the US President Barack Obama criticized China for its failure to realize what he termed crossing the line by North Korea a country the US and its allies blame to have been behind the sinking of a South Korean military ship.

Obama to said China’s shying away from the harsh facts about North Korea's behaviour was ‘a bad habit we need to break.’ Pyongyang has denied any roles in the Cheonan case by maintaining that its powerful military simply does not need to get involved in incidents of such nature.

Moreover there have been reports of direct US involvement in the sinking of Cheonan when one of its mine laying ships happened to be in the area on that same day when an explosion closely resembling a sea mine blast ripped through the vessel. South Korea and US claim a North Korean torpedo sank the vessel by showing a nearly intact section of an aged torpedo found at the bottom of the Yellow Sea.

But independent analysts say the blast sinking Cheonan occurred outside of the ship while a torpedo blast would normally pulverize the fired weapon itself beyond recognition after hitting a target. Also, at the time of that incident the former Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama was faced with the stark choice of removing a controversial US airbase at Okinawa Island. Most Japanese blame the airbase for increased pollution, criminal activities including rape and other felonies in that environmentally sensitive region. Hatoyama was quick to blame North Korea for the blast and thus backtracked on his earlier promises to relocate of Futenma airbase because of growing tensions in the region.

Increased US hostilities toward Korean unification prompted North Korea issue a statement saying Pyongyang would not hesitate to bolster its nuclear deterrence. ‘The recent disturbing development on the Korean Peninsula underscores the need for [North Korea] to bolster its nuclear deterrent in a newly developed way to cope with the US persistent hostile policy toward [the North] and military threat toward it,’ the North's foreign ministry said, just hours after Obama's comments.’ KCNA, central Korean official news agency reported as saying.

Independent studies show that a US raising mine was in fact behind the blast that sank South Korean military ship Cheonan in the

Yellow Sea.
