Workers will clearly answer the government and this reform which abolishes social security: Union Memebr.
June 29, 2010 (Hamsayeh.Net) - Greek workers and unions plan to stage a protest against government’s austerity measures, which they say are not going to help an economic recovery.
The government of George Papandreou under pressure from huge external debt by years of overspending was eventually forced to cut down on public services and pensions. Tuesday’s 24-hour strike would include public offices, local media, schools and bank workers.
Many Greeks believe government’s austerity measures won’t be able to recover the economy. Despina Spanou, a board member of a local union said those measures won’t help but rather make the recession deeper and lead to greater poverty. ‘Workers will clearly answer the government and this reform which abolishes social security,’ he said. Greece has been hit hard by the US-led breakdown of 2008 when the huge real estate bubble burst bringing down western financial establishment with it. Greece’s main tourism industry is also suffering because of US-led war on terrorism near oil rich regions.
