Energy poor Colombia, much supported by Washington for providing leap services during their so-called joined operation against illegal drug trades, is the United States' last foothold in rich Latin America. July 06, 2010 (Hamsayeh.Net) - New Colombian president Juan Manuel Santos who last month won a close race to lead the pro-US Latin American country could be arrested if he enters neighboring Ecuador. Ecuador’s popular President Rafael Correa reminded Colombia’s president-elect of his outstanding arrest warrant as soon as he tries to enter Ecuador on an official visit or otherwise. Jose Manuel Santos involvement as Colombian defense minister in a 2008 brutal raid on a FARC guerrilla camp inside Ecuador prompted the Supreme Court in Quito to issue him an arrest warrant. Energy poor Colombia, much supported by Washington for providing leap services during their so-called joined operation against illegal drug trades, is the United States' last foothold in rich Latin America. Regional countries have expressed concerns over Juan Manuel Santos saying he would not hesitate to stage a regional warfare on behalf of his benefactor the United States. Ecuadorian President Correa during a recent visit in Caracas told reporters that the outstanding arrest warrant issued by country’s Supreme Court still stands and only those independent judiciary authorities would able to deal with this case. ‘A crime was committed,’ said Correa, adding he could not interfere in the process, reported Reuters on Monday.
