We are justifiably concerned about the extra-territorial nature of certain unilateral sanctions recently imposed by individual countries: Indian Official. July 10, 2010 (Hamsayeh.Net) - India rebuffs US self-imposed sanctions against Iran saying such extra-territorial measures do not correspond with international norms, directly undermine India’s national interests and harm the country’s energy security. Despite last month’s UNSC resolution that urged sanctions against certain Iranian entities, Iran and India began their scheduled two-day meeting aimed at boosting bilateral relations. Iran’s Economy Minister Seyyed Shamsedin Hosseini and India Foreign Minister S.M. Krishna attended Iran and India Joint Commission in New Delhi on Thursday. India condemned extra-territorial nature of US unilateral sanctions on Iran a move supposedly aimed at curbing the energy-rich Middle Eastern country’s fast developing nuclear program. ‘We are justifiably concerned about the extra-territorial nature of certain unilateral sanctions recently imposed by individual countries,’ said Indian Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao. The Indian minister added that Iran is an extremely important country to India for energy security and access to Central Asian markets. In its futile attempts to curtail Iran’s nuclear and scientific progress, the United States and its allies have in the past tried to lure other countries join an all out economic embargo against Iran. But leading global economies like India, China, Brazil and Russia have time and time again rebuffed US attempts to break international norms by engaging itself in such misleading practices.
