Cheonan was cruising in a shallow area close to the shore when suddenly its propeller got tangled in fishing net. The vessel tried to recover by sailing into deeper sea when it touched an antenna-shaped detonator of a sea mine. July 28, 2010 (Hamsayeh.Net) - Russian investigators have concluded that a sea mine and not a torpedo caused the Cheonan incident, in which a South Korean military vessel sank in the Yellow Sea on May 31. The report by Hankyoreh Shinmun indicate, Russia would try to convince the US and South Koreans that North Korea had nothing to do with the incident. The United States and South Korean government were quick to blame North Korea for that accident. Earlier, independent sources concluded that a US launched rising sea mine did explode on the exterior of the vessel since the damaged area did not reveal evidence of a torpedo explosion. The Cheonan was basically cut in half, which is normally a clear sign of sea mine explosion at some distance from its target. According to Russian investigators, at the time Cheonan was cruising in a shallow area close to the shore when suddenly its propeller got tangled in fishing net. The vessel tried to recover by sailing into deeper sea when it touched an antenna-shaped detonator of a sea mine that caused the explosion. The report did not say if the mine was a North Korean one. This precise report contradicts South Korean hasty version of events, which said a torpedo fired by North Korea caused the explosion. South Korean defense ministry spokesman Won Tae-Jae quickly dismissed Hnakyoreh Shinmun’s report by saying, ‘There is no possibility that the Cheonan was exploded after hitting a mine.’ Russia said it would inform Seoul of its latest findings after reviewing materials collected so far. |
Both the United States and South Korea would soon find out that a sea mine caused the Cheonan incident and not a North Korean torpedo
