UN to Set Up an Independent Panel to Investigate the Flotilla Attack | |||

What the General Secretary forgot to mention was that the Israeli attack on six-ship flotilla isn’t just about Turkey and Israel relationship, but rather between Israel and the international community.
August 03, 2010 (Hamsayeh.Net) - UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon has finally announced setting up an independent UN panel of inquiry into the Israel’s blatant attack on unarmed international members of a humanitarian flotilla on May 31. The UN chief, who is well known for his double-standards and technocratic leanings has agreed to set up an independent panel to investigate the flotilla attack. Ban Ki-Moon said, ‘This is unprecedented that we are establishing this panel, I sincerely hope that this will greatly, positively contribute to the peace process as well as improvement of relations between Israel and Turkey.’ What the General Secretary forgot to mention was that the Israeli attack on six-ship flotilla isn’t just about Turkey and Israel relationship, but rather between Israel and the rest of international community. ‘I hope the panel will fulfill its mandate in accordance with the presidential statement of the Security Council, and submit its first progress report by mid September, and will continue to liaise with the ongoing domestic investigations of both Israel and Turkey,’ Ban said. Ban Ki-Moon’s attempt to make the flotilla incident an isolated case of misunderstanding between Turkey and Israel, should come as no surprise to the global community. Another instance of UN horrendous negligence with regard to its responsibilities is the case of Haiti. The poor island of Haiti nearly six months after a devastating earthquake continues to wait for UN-sponsored financial aid promised long time ago. Haiti has so far received only a fraction of nearly $5 billion in aid with United States being the main leader so far refusing to pay its share of $1.5 billion aid to Haiti while 1.5 million people are stranded in devastated areas.
