Latin Leaders to Visit South Ossetia on its Independence Day

The two progressive Latin leaders Hugo Chavez and Daniel Ortega will attend the 20th anniversary celebrations of South Ossetia’s deceleration of independence on September 20th.

August 09, 2010 (Hamsayeh.Net) - The Presidents of Venezuela and Nicaragua, the two Latin American allies plan an upcoming official visit to Georgia’s breakaway region of South Ossetia, this fall.

According to South Ossetian President Eduard Kokoity, the two progressive Latin leaders Hugo Chavez and Daniel Ortega will attend the 20th anniversary celebrations of South Ossetia’s deceleration of independence on September 20th, Russian news agency Interfax reported. 'World-renowned former athlete and football player Diego Maradona will also attend the ceremonies on that day,' said Kokoity.

The South Ossatian region, declaring independence from Georgia in 1990, has been at the centre of disputes between Tiblisi and Moscow. Georgia’s US supported administration of Mikheil Saakashvili had imposed economic blockade on South Ossitia since its independence. In 2004 and 2008 Georgia tried to retake the region by military force when each time encountered stiff resistance by local partisans and Russian troops.

The Georgian President is a staunch supporter of the United States and its way of life, presumably based on Hollywood’s notion of depicting the United States as a land of golden opportunity to movie enthusiasts worldwide.  But for Saakashvili and its Rose Revolution ideals, currently history’s most indebted nation i.e. the United States is helplessly struggling with collapse of its economy, unable to provide financial benefits to its cheer leaders like it did before.

The US has long lost its former reputation as the land of golden opportunity and today is world's number one record holder for crime, homelessness, foreclosure, debt, pollution, racism, violence, bankruptcy, oil consumption, energy waste, war and other social ills.

The South Ossetians have longed for better regional cooperation with neighboring countries and recognize the importance of such cooperation.
