For those who claim that the United States is now genuinely interested in talks it would be important to remember the events following Obama’s ascent into presidency.

Tehran, August 14, 2010 (Hamsayeh.Net) - Tehran’s Friday Prayers Leader, Ayatollah Ahmad Jannati, speaking to thousands of worshipers at Tehran University campus yesterday warned of another set of trickery and cheating by the US’ supposed giving green light to hold further talks with Iran.

The substitute Friday Prayers Leader said this isn’t the first time they (the US) are showing interest for talks and referred to last Iranian year’s US initiated support for a coup d’etat in Iran while pretending to be holding talks with Iran at the same time.

Ayatollah Jannati said for those who claim that the United States is now genuinely interested in talks it would be important to remember the events following Obama’s ascent into presidency. ‘Have you forgotten what they have done? Do you think they have changed? Do you think that Americans have come to their senses? They have not changed and are the same,’ Jannati said. According to Friday Prayers’ speaker, the US have yet set aside enmities toward Iran and if they show green light for talks it is simply out of disguise.

In fact during nearly two years of Obama’s presidency, there have been numerous instances where the US President openly advocated contradictory policies both in respect to domestic and international issues. An example was when before his election Obama promised clear timetable for US troops speedy withdrawal from Iraq and Afghanistan aslo claiming this to be core foundation of his strategy. Later the US President slowly backtracked from his earlier promises by keeping troops in both Iraq and Afghanistan. 

Another instance was during last year’s environmental summit in Copenhagen where earlier Obama had promised US cooperation and leadership to reuce pollution causing agents alongside other countries but then during the actual summit started the game of blaming others for global environmental problems. This is despite the fact that the United States has been the biggest emitter of greenhouse gases for almost a century of its own industrial activities.

Ayatollah Jannati also down played effectiveness of economic sanctions on Iran. He said, ‘…the nation and the officials should be vigilant in a bid to make the sanctions ineffective.’
