Russia's Atomic Chief Sergei Kiriyenko: This is an important event. We declare that Russia has stood by all its commitments to the Bushehr nuclear power plant. Bushehr, August 21, 2010 (Hamsayeh.net) - Iran and Russia today inaugurate the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant in the southern port-city of Bushehr on the shores of the Persian Gulf. Russia’s atomic chief Sergei Kiriyenko arrived in Iran and joined his Iranian counterpart Ali Akbar Salehi in press a conference this morning on the site of the nuclear power plant. The transfer of 163 fuel rods has started following the press conference and a complete fuel installation should take about two more weeks. Bushehr will begin electricity generation in a about two months, adding 1000 megawatts to existing national network. Bushehr NPP is unique in many aspects. According to Kiriyenko, the completetion of this plant must be considered a high achievement for the technical team to reengineer what had been left off German engineering during its initial stages. The German Siemens Company primarily contracted to build the project but promptly back tracked due to external pressures at that time. Kiriyenko further expressed satisfaction with Russia's commitment to its part of the deal and noted, ‘This is an important event. We declare that Russia has stood by all its commitments to the Bushehr nuclear power plant.’ Russia is a pioneering nation in the field of nuclear technology since the end of World War II. During the Cold War Russian scientists and engineers easily outflanked the United States not only in nuclear science but also other fields such as space exploration and pure studies.
