Security firms are running a parallel security structure to the Afghan government, that they are looting and stealing from the Afghan people, and some of them turn into terrorist groups at nighttime: Hamid Karzai. August 23, 2010 (Hamsayeh.Net) - Afghan President warned US private security personnel to stop harassing the Afghans and end their Mafia-like activities around the country. Hamid Karzai said those American private firms supposedly doing security missions inside Afghanistan are nothing but Mafia groups funding the corruption. ‘I am appealing to the US taxpayers not to allow their hard-earned money to be wasted on groups that are not only providing lots of inconveniences to the Afghan people, but actually are, God knows, in contact with Mafia-like groups and perhaps also funding militants and insurgents and terrorists through those firms,’ Karzai said as quoted by Los Angeles Times on Monday. The Afghan President has set a four-month deadline for security firms to leave the country, which has caused criticism from the US that believes private security personnel should leave in gradually. ’Until that time (security firms are no longer needed), though, we're going to continue to work with the government of Afghanistan to improve the oversight and management as well as developing plans to progressively reduce their numbers as the security conditions permit,’ Pentagon spokesman Whitman said in response to Karzai’s call earlier. Nearly 30,000 US private security personnel are at the core of drug trade, money laundering, bribe and corruption in the war-ridden nation. Some contractors actually bribe Taliban for not attacking supply convoys from Pakistan. Karzai describes the security firms as, ‘running a parallel security structure to the Afghan government, that they are looting and stealing from the Afghan people, and some of them turn into terrorist groups at nighttime.’
