Shroud's Release Called Off Due to Ongoing Investigation

Judicial proceeding in the defendant’s case have not been completed. Because the legal procedure for Sarah Shourd's case is not finished, her release is cancelled.

Tehran, September 11, 2010 (Hamsayeh.Net) - Iran suspended the release of a female US detainee, Sarah Shroud, due to ongoing investigation and unresolved issues pertaining to her spying charges.

Despite an Eid Al-Fitr announcement by Iranian Foreign Ministry on her imminent release, today Iran’s Press TV reported that her case is once again back to Tehran prosecutor general’s office for further investigation. Tehran Prosecutor General Abbas Jafar-Dolatabadi said, ‘judicial proceeding in the defendant’s case have not been completed,’ as quoted by Press TV.

’Because the legal procedure for Sarah Shourd's case is not finished, her release is cancelled,’ Dolatabadi said. Sarah Shroud was scheduled for release on Saturday as it was reported earlier.

The three US citizens detained in Iran were arrested at an Iranian border checkpoint crossing near the town of Marivan in Kurdistan, July last year. They were supposedly hiking in Iraqi Kurdistan -- an unlikely place for young international tourists to go about hiking when the region is rife with various dangers.

In the mean time oil-rich Iraq remains under US occupation where tens of thousands of US troops and private contractors occupy huge basis while a brutal civil war is raging all around the country. The US Army is keeping over 50,000 troops in waiting position inside Iraq and at the same time it employs private contractors to conduct studies for future contingency operations.
