According to military analysts there exist no defense against a Yakhont once it has been fired on a target at up to 300 km distance. September 21, 2010 (Hamsayeh.Net) - Russia defended its sell of powerful Yakhont missile system to Syria, citing the necessity to defend a Russian maintenance facility near Syria’s Mediterranean port of Tartus. Russia also plans to modernize the site that serves safety of Russian supply vessels, military ships in the area. Moscow said it plans to forge ahead with a 2007 agreement with Damascus on the delivery of several units of Bastion anti-ship missile systems that would protect its vessels in the area. Both the Zionist regime and the United States expressed displeasures with the contract. On Monday the Zionist regime strongly criticized Russia for selling the Bastion anti-ship missile system to Syria saying the advanced weapons could end up in the hands of Hezbolla from neighboring Lebanon. Earlier, US Secretary of Defense Robert Gates voiced similar concern on the sell of advanced system to Syria. He said,’ Washington shared Israeli concerns about proliferation of advanced weapons that could destabilize the region,’ as quoted by Pentagon Press Secretary Geoff Morrel, Reuters reported. The $300 million contract was signed between Russia and Syria last week following initial agreement of 2007. During the 2006 Israeli invasion of Lebanon, Israel lost several of its state-of-art military ships with one vessel completely destroyed by Hezbollah warriors engaged in delivering deadly blows upon IDF from all directions. Initially anticipating a quick victory over Lebanese resistance, the IDF soon realized it was time to leave the area as quickly as possible. The 33-day war ended with a clear victory for Lebanese forces against the Zionist regime. Russian-made Yakhont anti-ship missile system is a highly lethal supersonic missile that can carry up to 300 kg warhead with cruising speed of 2.5 Mach. The missile itself travels several meters above ground thus making it impossible to detect and destroy. According to military analysts there exist no defense against a Yakhont once it has been fired on a target at up to 300 km distance.
