Their attempts to sell weapons to the region are aimed at sowing discord among the countries of the Middle East: Iran's Defense Minister. September 23, 2010 (Hamsayeh.Net) – Iran’s Defense Minister Brigadier General Ahmad Vahidi said the country plans to manufacture an effective anti-aircraft missile defense system similar to S-300 in the future, as reported by Iran’s Fars news agency on Wednesday. The announcement followed a recent report that Russia had seemingly postponed delivery of S-300 system to Iran under pressure from the United States and Israel supposedly in accordance with a UNSC resolution against Iran. The Iranian Defense Minister also announced domestic defense industries further seek to improve missile capabilities and procure long-range missile in the near future. Iran has already achieved sending its own telecommunication satellite called OMID into orbit last year using a domestically built long-range missile. The country enjoys a robust missile industry following eight years of Iran-Iraq war during the 80’s. S-300 missile system is an effective anti-aircraft and missile weapon designed to shoot down several incoming threats simultaneously. It has a range of up to 150 km. US-led NATO forces are stationed in a number of military bases around Russia’s territory from the Arctic region to Eastern Europe particularly in Poland very close to Russian enclave of Kaliningrad. Both US and NATO claim their missile system is defensive in nature that is to prevent incoming missiles from other countries than Russia. Moscow has voiced concerns over such military deployments near its borders.
