No Evidence of a Nuclear Weapons Program in Iran: Lavrov

Russia urges Iran continue constructive cooperation with the IAEA and do more to convince the international community about peaceful nature of its nuclear program.

September 24, 2010 (Hamsayeh.Net) – Sergei Lavorov, the Russian Foreign Minister, told American PBS TV channel on Thursday, there’s no evidence of a smoking gun on Iranian nuclear program at this time.

Lavrov also urged Iran to continue cooperation with the IAEA and do more to convince the international community about peaceful nature of its nuclear program. Moscow has repeatedly voiced support for a peaceful nuclear program in Iran. Unlike US and some other western countries both Russia and China do not support US backed sanctions against Iran. Russia believes negotiation is the best way to resolve outstanding technical issues.

Lavrov also warned against talks of attacking Iran. He said a military attack against Iran would engulf the entire region.

Last month Iranian and Russian technicians began placing fuel rods inside the core of Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant. Iran’s first 1000 mw nuclear power plant is due to start generating electricity in the near future.

Washington and its allies have been against Iran’s accessing nuclear technology including a domestic uranium enrichment program. But fortunately, much to their dislike, Iran has achieved great progress in all aspects of this important field of science in recent years.
