More Protests in Greece and Eastern Europe Over Austerity Program

Greek strikers in the country’s public sector are angry at IMF imposed program against working people. They demand equal rights for all the citizens and want rich people to pay their share of the country’s debt.

October 07, 2010 (Hamsayeh.Net) - Europe is hit with fresh protests over plans by governments to implement stringent austerity measures that target working class people. Greece once again witnessed a 24-hour strike by public servants protesting wage, pension cuts and extra taxation.

In Bulgaria several thousand demonstrators took to the streets of the capital Sofia, asking the government to cancel plan to raise the retirement age to 65. Last week people in western European countries including Spain, Belgium, Portugal, Austria and Ireland staged massive strikes to counter governments’ austerity programs.

Greek demonstrators in the country’s public sector are angry at IMF's imposed program against the working people. They demand equal rights for all the citizens and want rich people to pay their share of the country’s debt. Last week, Chinese officials said they plan to help Greece pay part of its debt, but economists believe the offer would not do much to alleviate the  deep-rooted financial troubles dating back to the time of real estate bubble.

Greece is also suffering from a protracted slump in its tourism industry due to US’ random war efforts particularly in the oil-rich regions of Middle East thus hindering safe travels and sightseeing to major tourist destinations in Europe.  Last week, US issued travel warning for Europe apparently after a minor incident in France a week before.

Mainstream media in the US are used to often transform minor incidents into some major events and vice versa switch major ones into something that could be ignored altogether. For instance, the world witnessed tremendous hypes over a failed car-bombing attempt in New York last year, whereas the death of hundreds of thousands of victims in Rwanda back in 1994 received almost no media coverage in the United States at the time of that incident.
