Attack on Iran's N. Facilities Won't End Program
Dec. 26, 09 (Hamsayeh.Net) - Top Russian officials dismissed false allegations about the Iranian nuclear program. Deputy Russian Foreign Minister Alexander Saltanov told journalists that Moscow has no evidence Iran is planning to divert its domestic atomic program to build weapons of mass destruction.
He said there is no proof that such a program even exists. In addition, Yevgeny Primakov, the former Russian prime minister who is an expert on Middle Eastern affairs told agencies about lack of evidence on Iran’s rerouting of the nuclear program towards nuclear weapons. ‘Russia has no concrete information that Iran is planning to construct a weapon. It may be more like Japan, which has nuclear readiness but does not have a bomb,’ he told The Jerusalem Post.
Russian officials believe in the event if there is a military attack on Iranian nuclear installations by either Israel or the United States, it might only delay the program but will certainly not end it. Moreover, both Russia and China stand against US and NATO expansions in the area thereby controlling strategic regions they consider vital to their interests like the Caucasus and Central Asia.
‘If Israel attacks Iran it will cause great instability and will only postpone the Iranian program, not end it,’ Russian Deputy FM said. Iran as a signatory to the NPT says it has all the rights to pursue its peaceful domestic nuclear program but Western countries see Iran’s potentials as a regional power to be detrimental for their interests in the energy rich Middle East.
Israel on the hand refuses to sign the NPT and despite having a relatively small territory, continues to pile up over 200 nuclear weapons. IAEA has never been allowed to inspect Israeli nuclear sites or verify its stocks of weapons of mass destruction.
