Houthi Fighters Vowed to Continue their Campaign Against Sa'naa
Dec. 27, 09 (Hamsayeh.Net) - The war in Yemen intensifies daily as Saudi forces batter northern Yemen villages along the border. Yesterday more than 700 missiles, artillery bombardments, tank raids and mortar attacks targeted those villages, Houthi fighters’ website reports.
A top Yemeni official confirmed his government is receiving support from Washington to launch attacks on what they suspect are bases for Al-Qaeda operatives in Yemen. Mohamed al-Anisi, the Yemeni national security chief, told the Saudi Arabian newspaper Okaz that Al-Qaeda fighters have been setting up bases in Yemen and his government with helps from the US and Saudi Arabia is confronting the international Sunni Muslim terrorist organization.
Saudi Arabia joined the war on Yemen last month under the pretext of securing borders against Houthi insurgents from Sa’ada and surrounding regions. Houthis who are followers of Shiite Islam have been under constant pressures and segregation by the central government in Sa’naa for years. Saudi’s recent attacks on Houthis involved use of certain banned weapons like phosphorous bombs similar to those used by the Israeli army against Gazans during last year’s offensive.
US, Saudi Arabia and Yemen governments’ war on northern Yemen come at the time when situations in Iraq and Afghanistan are transforming from bad to worse. Even with additional 70,000 troops and private contractors to war in Afghanistan, the US army experiences an unprecedented level of uncertainty over how to end those wars as quickly as possible. As the Houthi fighters vowed they would continue their campaign against Sa’naa, one can expect prolonged conflicts to drag on in the region for years to come.
