Blasts Killed Over 40 in Karachi
Dec. 29, 09 (Hamsayeh.Net) - A major blast rocked Pakistan’s largest city Karachi during Ashoura procession on Monday. Blasts killed more than 40 people and 95 other injured. After the bombings Pakistani police and military personnel trieed to control the situation, but angry mob attacked buildings and parked automobiles, setting many on fire.
More than 400 shops and over 50 vehicles were torched during yesterday’s riots across the metropolis. The main Ashoura procession took place on city’s main road Mohamad ali Jinnah. Pakistan has experienced various factional skrimishes previously and yesterday’s bombing on Shiites groups could have been a work by other factions hostile to Shiites in Pakistan.
President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani, strongly condemned the blast at main procession of Aushra in Karachi. Top Pakistani officials ordered immediate inquiry into the incident and also ordered immediate assistance for victims.
Pakistan a country of 160 million people holding over 60 nuclear weapons is quickly turning into a fertile ground for terrorists and extremists from various factions and groups. NATO and US military campaign on Afghanistan have expanded the theatre of war to Pakistan since about a year ago when many Taliban fighters used northern Pakistani villages to stage attacks inside Afghanistan.
