US Mauls Targeted Sanctions Against Iran

Economic Sanctions on Iran Would Have Very Limited Effects: Experts

Dec. 31, 09 (Hamsayeh.Net) - The United States and its allies are talking about the end of this year as the final deadline for Iran to accept a nuclear fuel swap proposal or face economic sanctions. Washington initially talked of implementing energy sanctions on Tehran, but later changed its mind saying there is a risk of a backlash from the Iranian people.

Western powers now consider more directed sanctions, which they say would target only certain groups or industries involved heavily in day-to-day Iranian economy. But the fact is these types of sanctions have been in place since the beginning of the Islamic Revolution in 1979. The US and its staunch allies like Britain have been using economic sanctions as a weapon of choice against countries that do not follow the West but instead pursue their own independent policies.

In Iraq, economic sanctions such as ‘food for oil’ program were quite successfully implemented against the regime of Saddam Hussein, over the years. It is almost certain that placing similar actins on Iran could have very limited results mainly because Iran is a completely different country altogether both economically and geopolitically.

Based on a report by Al Jazeera, the US and partners will try to bring China and Russia on board to support extensive measures against Iran. However such a scenario is unlikely since Beijing and Moscow already said they don’t see the need for economic sanctions.

Several US diplomats told reporters that the West wants to avoid oil embargo on Iran because of the fear that it could trigger a nationalist backlash from ordinary Iranians. Again people in Iran have been living under sanctions for many years and it’s more likely that imposing unilateral sanction would hurt western economies even harder than the other party, especially at the time when the global economic situation is facing a prolonged recession.
