US Wars Against Terrorism Cost American Taxpayers

The Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan Cost over

$ 1 trillion

January. 17, 2010 (Hamsayeh.Net) –
The United States issued an expenditure statement on the ongoing wars in Iraq and Afghanistan since the US-led forces invaded Iraq and Afghanistan under pretext of combating terrorism.

Based on a report by Reuters, in the latest official figures the US has so far spent over $ 1 trillion of the North American country’s taxpayer’s money for fictitious wars against terrorism without capturing a single individual named Osama bin Laden, the supposed mastermind behind the September 11 events.

Almost two thirds of that money has been spent in the Iraqi conflict. From now it is likely that due to US’ shift in strategy more funds would be allocated to the war in Afghanistan. US President Obama said Afghanistan poses a more strategic challenge to the Western interests in the region. However, nobody could tell for how long the US intends to continue with its self-prophesized war against terrorism campaign in Hindu Kush Mountains, from the fact that Taliban fighters are not going to cease their offensives against the US-led coalition troops in both Afghanistan and Pakistan.

The US Congress already approved $1.05 trillion dollars for those wars out of which 747.3 billions was spent for Iraqi conflict, $299 billion in Afghanistan conflict, as shown on its official website. The expenses also included billions of dollars for boosting security measures at various embassies and bases in the region. The Obama administration meanwhile is seeking additional $33 billion for troops surge initiative in the coming months.

But most Americans feel the wars is costing more than expected, like the US Senate Armed Forces Services Committee Chairman Carl Levin who said. ‘I think that in general the American people, while obviously this is very difficult financially for us, will continue to support the troops that are there and the Congress will reflect that.’ As Americans are tiring of wars it seems the Obama administration would have a difficult time to convince people about US military operations and their costs in Afghanistan and Iraq.
