Tehran Inaugurates Country's Largest Urban Tunnel | |||
Over 2 km long and 30 meters underground, the new tunnel could help ease traffic congestions
Tehran, February 01, 2010 (Hamsayeh.Net) - Tehran opened its largest centrally located underground tunnel called Toheed, today on the anniversary of the return of the Islamic Revolution Leader Ayatollah Khomeni to Iran from years of exile imposed by the former Shah of Iran.
The Toheed tunnel constructed within 32 months extends 2,136 meters long and 30 meters above the ground. It should help ease traffic congestions in this part of Tehran, which normally suffers from overcrowded streets.
Some of the other features of this tunnel include saving up to one million litters of gasoline per day, increasing traffic flow by %73, easing north to south traffic flow. The Tunnel is also earthquake resistant while Moblie phone users may make use of their mobile phones when traversing through the tunnel. |
Toheed Tunnel extends over two kilometers connecting north-south bound traffic in central parts of Tehran
