The Russian S-300 is one of the most reliable anti-missile weapons available in the world today.

 

February 05, 2010 (Hamsayeh.Net) - In a surprise move Russia announced it would guarantee delivery of S-300 missile defense system to Iran. The two countries signed a contract for the delivery S-300 missile system to Iran last year, but Russia delayed the shipment several times for what it described as technical problems.

 

‘Iran is ready to receive this system and our Russian colleagues have assured us that they will meet their obligations,’ Ambassador Seyyed Mahmoud-Reza Sajjadi told RIA Novosti in Moscow on Thursday. The Iranian Ambassador explained that some technical issues have emerged since the signing of the contract, but hoped they will be resolved soon.

 

Russia’s S-300 delivery to Iran follows some recent announcements by the US over missile shield contracts with Poland, Taiwan and Persian Gulf states worth billions of euros for the American military industry. The Russian S-300 is one of the most reliable anti-missile weapons available in the world today, even more advanced than the American manufactured patriot system, which failed a test over the Pacific Ocean, last week. 

 

Iran however called Washington’s latest disinformation campaign against the Iranian missile threat as fictitious only aimed at selling more weapons to the oil rich states in the Persian Gulf. Iran’s officials have repeatedly clarified that the country’s missiles are not directed at any neighboring countries and are for defensive purposes only .

 

Also yesterday, the Romanian President Traian Basescu announced his country’s willingness to host American missile system by the year 2015. There was similar announcement earlier by the Polish government to deploy US missile shield very close to Russian border, a decision that was cause of some negative reactions from Moscow.
