Iran to Begin 20 Percent Enrichment by Tomorrow | |||
Tehran will hand over an official letter to the IAEA Tomorrow.
February 08, 2010 (Hamsayeh.Net) - Iran’s nuclear chief Ali Akbar Salehi speaking to international reporters today announced the country’s nuclear enrichment facilities would begin the 20 percent enrichment level by tomorrow following an official letter to the IAEA.
Salehi indicated that the letter informing the International Atomic Energy Agency of Iran’s further enrichment plans will be sent early tomorrow and start the enrichment process right after. The head of the atomic organization also informed of building 10 new facilities over the next year. ‘We will hand over an official letter to the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) tomorrow, informing the agency that we will start making 20 per cent enriched fuel from Tuesday at the Natanz plant,’ Salehi said.
Salehi reassured everyone that Iran could halt the process of 20 percent enrichment level at any time if it receives the uranium fuel needed for Tehran’s medical reactor. ‘Iran would halt its enrichment process for the Tehran research reactor any time it receives the necessary fuel for it,’ he said.
Early this week Iranian officials reiterated Tehran’s willingness to finalize a nuclear swap deal, but Western powers led by the United States overplayed their usual negotiating tactics hoping to take away most of the domestically produced low enriched uranium out of the country so Iran would never see it back again.
The US and its allies immediately threatened Iran with more severe sanctions following the nuclear swap talks early this week. US defense secretary, Robert Gates called for more international pressures on Iran saying, ‘…the international community has offered the Iranian government multiple opportunities to provide reassurance of its intentions. The results have been very disappointing.’ Gates didn’t mention that Iran itself has always been a leading member of the international community from the very beginning stages of human civilization.
British government also criticized Iran for going ahead with its peaceful nuclear program. A spokesman for the British foreign ministry said, ‘Reports that Iran is planning to enrich some of their fuel to 20 per cent level of enrichment are clearly a matter of serious concern.’
Iran’s latest announcement of 20 percent enrichment is essentially a must for Tehran’s medical reactor, which supplies radioisotopes for hospitals across the country. Iran also plans to produce 20,000 megawatts of electricity through nuclear power generators in the next few years.
