US-led NATO Forces Began Offensive on Marjah | |||

The operation dubbed ‘Moshtarek’ aims at conquering the small town of 60,000 inhabitants, mostly very poor villagers.
February 13, 2010 (Hamsayeh.Net) - NATO and US troops launched their much-publicized offensive on the small town of Marjah in southern Helmand Province of Afghanistan, last night.
Latest reports indicate 6,500 US, British and Canadian troops are involved in the offensive along with some local Afghan mercenaries. The assault is considered the largest US-led NATO offensive in that country since Barack Obama was elected as the US president.
Marjah, NATO military officials claim, is an important strategic town for the Taliban because the region around this town is ripe with poppy cultivations, a major source of income for local Pashtun residents. A Taliban commander said his fighters would remain in Marjah and prepare for close- range gun battles against invading troops. He also said Taliban fighters have planted thousands of IED’s all over the town ready to inflict major damages to US-led NATO troops.
The operation dubbed ‘Moshtarek’ or joint in local language aims at conquering the small town of 60,000 inhabitants, mostly very poor villagers. Many analysts however question the wisdom of launching costly military offensives against Pashtun population who have lived in the area between Afghanistan and Pakistan since the beginning of history. The whole notion of this war against Taliban may have more to do with having an excuse to boost Western military presence in the region particularly in Afghanistan, a country that borders Russia, Iran and China.
Such a presence complements NATO’s activities in the strategic Persian Gulf / Sea of Oman areas, thus helping Western bargaining power against rapidly growing economies of Asia, Russia and containing Iran's growing regional power. No other explanations could justify NATO’s grand offensive against such poor people in the first place.
From an accounting perspective, it could have been a lot less expensive if only a fraction of NATO’s overall expenses were given to Afghan people including Pashtuns as war reparations, so there wouldn’t have been an Afghan war to begin with.
