Threats of Economic Sanctions Could Never Work Against Iran.
Tehran, February 15, 2010 (Hamsayeh.Net) - US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton made a trip to oil rich Persian Gulf states to shore up supports for a Western economic blockade against Iran.
She says Tehran is pursuing a dangerous game of nuclear brinkmanship and should immediately halt the program to prevent chaos in the region. In her efforts she tries to entice Persian Gulf Sheikhdoms for supporting punitive round of anti-Iran sanctions aimed at crippling the Iranian economy. She would also try to convince the regional countries to support Palestine-Israel peace negotiations.
‘Iran leaves the international community little choice but to impose greater costs for its provocative steps, and together, we are encouraging Iran to reconsider its dangerous policy decisions’ Al Jazeera reported Clinton as addressing a conference in Doha. The US official also suggested that Saudi Arabia should reassure China of its oil requirements so the latter would also support an all out economic blockade against Iran.
Lately, US-led Western allies have issued blunt warnings of severe economic blockade against Tehran very similar to the ones imposed on Germany before the Second World War or Iraq during the Persian Gulf War. But so many experts believe such a far-fetched measure should never work since in the case of Iran there are geopolitical, physical and historical factors involved making the country immune from severest of sanctions.
Jeffrey Feltman, the US assistant secretary of state, said 'We believe that all countries have a part to play in helping to sharpen the question for Iran, we would expect them [the Saudis] to use these visits, to use their relationships, in ways that can help increase the pressure that Iran would feel.’
The Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu traveled to Moscow, yesterday for more Russian support. Israeli military officials have expressed doubts over their own ability to conduct military strikes against Iran. Netanyahu asked Russia stop delivery of S-300 system to Iran, even though the anti-aircraft system is only a defensive weapon.
