Get out of there, return the Falkland Islands to the Argentines, enough playing empire: Chavez.
February 20,2010 (Hamsayeh.Net) - Leading Latin American President Hugo Chavez of Venezuela lambasted the UK for continuing to occupy the Falkland Islands, which from a historical perspective belong to Argentina.
Chavez said the British want to take over the energy resources of the Falkland Islands and for this reason all Latin America countries; particularly Venezuela must strengthen their military defenses to protect the region’s hydrocarbon riches.
Chavez asked, ‘how much longer former colonial states in Europe intend to occupy other peoples’ lands in violation of international rules, principles of geography, time and history,’ Presna Latina quoted Chavez as saying during a TV broadcast address on Friday. ‘Get out of there, return the Falkland Islands to the Argentines, enough plying empire.’ The leading Latina American leader demanded.
Both American and European colonialists have for very long periods taken away the riches of Latin American nations, thriving their empires since the discovery of the new world. In today’s world economy, however oil and gas are considered two of the most important resources necessary for economic development. Oil and gas reserves happen to abound in some parts of Latin America especially in Venezuela. The country’s energy reserves including the Orinoco oil basin is so huge that many desperate Western industrial nations, running out of their own, want to have their hands on.
The Argentinean government has repeatedly dismissed British claims on the islands. A decree issued recently by Argentine President Christina Fernandez invalidates the rights claimed by the old British Empire. Buenos Aires also announced that any commercial contracts including oil activities are considered null and void without due permissions from the Argentinean authorities.
