Lula: I want for Iran the same thing I want for Brazil.
March 04, 2010 (Hamsayeh.Net) - Leading Latin leaders rebuff US Secretary of State to the region in order to gather support for tougher anti-Iran actions.
In Brazil, the Brazilian President Luis Inacio Lula da Silva, even before Hillary Clinton had the chance to present her anti-Iran argument - the core purpose of her visit to the region, said his country only follows own policies and does not intend to bow down under external pressures.
The popular Brazilian President, who will visit Iran in May this year, said he would like to make a frank conversation with Iran over its rapidly evolving nuclear program when he visits Tehran. ‘I want for Iran the same thing I want for Brazil: to use the development of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes and if Iran agrees with that, Iran will have the support of Brazil,’ AP reported Lula as saying. The Brazilian President then added, ‘… and if Iran "wants to go beyond" pursuing nuclear power for peaceful purposes that Brazil would oppose its program.’
Lula was not the only official who rebuffed Clinton on her mission to South America; a rich and historic region long abused by the US as its own backyard. Brazil’s Foreign Minister Celso Amorim also clarified his country’s decision to follow own course of actions. ‘We will not simply bow down to an evolving consensus if we do not agree, because we have to think by ourselves and with our values and principles,’ Amorim said, as reported by AP.
The United States, Israel and some European allies, have tried hard to maintain their stronghold on the post WWII global establishment, in which Western corporations could rule the entire globe. Developing countries as well as other major powers like China, Brazil and Russia oppose this unilateral approach by the West and instead propose a multi-lateral approach to resolve important global issues.
