US Defense Secretary Rejects Israel's Call for Attacking Iran | ||||

I would disagree that only a credible military threat (would convince) Iran to take the actions it needs to end its nuclear weapons program: Robert Gates. November 08, 2010 (Hamsayeh.Net) - US Defense Secretary Robert Gates rejected Israel’s call for a military operation against Iran in order to completely stop the already advanced nuclear program of the Middle Eastern country. Earlier Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu urged US to strike Iran’s civilian nuclear program. However, Gates on Monday rejected such a call saying it would not be enough to actually stop the program. ‘I would disagree that only a credible military threat (would convince) Iran to take the actions it needs to end its nuclear weapons program,’ gates said, adding ‘the US is prepared to do what is necessary. But at this point it’s believed that the political, economic approach that we are taking is in fact having an impact in Iran.’ Despite all the influences the Israeli lobby has over the US, most Americans believe that United States has different sets of priorities to that of its much smaller ally. Also US President has repeatedly brushed aside Israel’s call for an attack on Iran. Western countries consider the current economic sanction as successful and that would soon force Tehran accept a total halt on its nearly completed peaceful nuclear program cycle. Iran on the other hand believes the sanction regime to be an ineffective measure. Iranian officials have already said that no amounts of sanctions or threats would be enough to stop Iran’s peaceful civilian program. |
