TEHRAN - A Brazilian foreign ministry official announced his country's opposition to the UN Security Council sanctions against Iran, calling the measure as "improper".

"Negotiation and talks are the only way to resolve Iran's nuclear issue and sanction cannot be viewed as a proper solution for the issue," Brazilian Deputy Foreign Minister for Political Affairs Roberto Jaguaribe said in a meeting with Head of the Iranian parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Alaeddin Boroujerdi here in Tehran on Tuesday evening.

He underlined all countries' right to access nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, and added, "Brazil does not agree with the UN Security Council's sanctions against Iran and believes that the measure is not a proper solution for Iran's nuclear issue."

Despite the rules enshrined in the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) entitling every member state, including Iran, to the right of uranium enrichment, Tehran is now under three rounds of UN Security Council sanctions for turning down West's illegitimate calls to give up its right of uranium enrichment.

Washington and its Western allies accuse Iran of trying to develop nuclear weapons under the cover of a civilian nuclear program, while they have never presented any corroborative evidence to substantiate their allegations. Iran denies the charges and insists that its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes only.

Elsewhere, Jaguaribe stressed the significance of his country's ties with Iran, and said, "Given the significant regional and international standing of Iran, consolidation of ties with the Islamic Republic is a priority in Brazil's foreign policy."

He also highlighted the important role played by the two countries' parliaments in the further consolidation of the bilateral ties.

Boroujerdi, for his part, reminded the ample capacities of the two countries for expanding and improving their bilateral relations, and urged both sides to utilize such potentials to further activate Iran-Brazil relations in line with their shared national interests.

The lawmaker also underscored that the Iranian parliament supports expansion of the two countries' relations in all the various fields.
