Kabul, October 10, 09 (Hamsayeh.Net) - It was almost eight years ago when the US army invaded Afghanistan under the overall pretext of combating terrorism and spreading of democracy.
The operation was initially dubbed 'Operation Infinite Justice,' which later changed to 'Operation Enduring Freedom’. As events unfold in Afghanistan these days, the US invasion of that country is more like both, enduring and infinite at the same time.
The US has nearly 70,000 troops and other NATO members have another 50,000 troops inside Afghanistan. Despite such a strong show of force, Taliban fighters continue to hold military superiority and their grip on Afghanistan increases daily.
In the midst of the ongoing clashes, reports indicate that most US troops suffer from serious psychological disorders having lost hope for the future altogether. The number of US troops diagnosed as being addicted to a locally grown substance known as opium is staggering.
Other more severe cases of addiction among US troops in Afghanistan have been reported where those in urgent need traded their combat rifles to obtain potent narcotics such as heroin.
The NATO and US troops' disillusionment with the war in Afghanistan is at its all time highs and military officials refuse to set a definite timetable for ending the fight. Close to 4000 multinational have been killed in Afghanistan so far.
Untold numbers of civilian casualties also suffered in the course of the war with apparently no end in sight.
