Tehran, Nov. 15, 09 (Hamsayeh.Net) - Western military analysts believe that Iran’s access to relatively advanced anti-aircraft missile system such as the S-300 would seriously undermine any hopes of aerial adventures against the oil rich country.
"If Tehran obtained the S-300, it would be a game-changer in military thinking for tackling Iran," says long-time Pentagon advisor Dan Goure as reported on Press TV website.
However, a senior Iranian lawmaker and Head of Iran’s Foreign Policy and National Security Commission reminded all those concerned that Iran is very much capable of manufacturing air-defence systems like the S-300, in the near future.
Speaking to Mehr News Agency on Saturday, Alaedin Boroujerdi said Iran and Russia have had a long history of defence cooperation and it’s crucial for Moscow to fulfil its contracts and obligations.
"The Russians should meet their commitment on the delivery of the missile system, which will only be used to defend the country's territory," said the Iranian lawmaker.
Boroujerdi underlined that, ‘Iran is not a country which would stop short of action in dealing with countries who fail to deliver on their promises.’ He said Iran is able to mass-produce the system domestically should Russia fail to comply with its obligations.
Iran and Russia signed a contract for deliveries of S-300 missiles in December 2007, but the Russian side is late on the delivery of the system for almost six month. The contract is worth about 750 million Euros.
Major General Hassan Firouzabadi, the chief of staff of Iran's armed forces said Moscow was now six months late in delivering the S-300 system to Tehran.
