Nov. 19, 09 (Hamsayeh.Net) - US President Barrack Obama while on a visit to South Korea warned Iran of fresh sanctions within the next few weeks if it does not comply with Western nuclear demands. Obama didn’t specify what types of sanctions he had in mind.
He said Tehran must meet a deadline for complying with what he called international demands or otherwise face ‘consequences’. He also said certain punitive measures could be agreed upon ‘within weeks’.
Iran has called for nuclear cooperation within the IAEA rules and regulations. Iran as a signatory to the NPT has full right to pursuit its domestic nuclear program. However, some Western countries and particularly the United States under pressure from Israeli lobbies active in the US government, are calling for Iran to forfeit its nuclear rights above and beyond the international norms.
Western countries hope on pressuring Iran to accept a proposed nuclear fuel exchange deal in which it supposedly would send stocks of enriched uranium to a third country for further processing.
Iran has rejected the idea saying it prefers to buy the uranium from foreign manufacturers or it could consider a fuel exchange only to take place inside its borders. Iran also has the capabilities to enrich its own needed uranium at higher levels required for Tehran rector.
‘Iran has taken weeks now and has not shown its willingness to say yes to this proposal ... and so as a consequence we have begun discussions with our international partners about the importance of having consequences,’ Obama said at a news conference with the South Korea's president, Lee Myung-bak.
‘Over the next several weeks, we will be developing a package of potential steps that we could take, that would indicate our seriousness to Iran.’ Obama added that he hoped Iran would change its mind.
