Brasilia, Nov. 24, 09 (Hamsayeh.Net) - President Lula of Brazil announced his full backing for Iranian peaceful nuclear program on Monday after holding talks with his Iranian counterpart Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in Brasilia.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting he backed Iran’s quest for ‘peaceful nuclear energy in full respect of international accords,’ and encouraged Iran to continue constructive dialogue with 5+1 group of countries. Lula hoped for a ‘…just and balanced solution on the nuclear issue in Iran.’
‘It doesn't help isolating Iran, therefore, it's important that someone sits down with Iran, talks with Iran and tries to establish some balance so that the Middle East can return to a certain sense of normalcy.’ Lula said.
During the Press conference, the Iranian President also spoke of Iran’s support for Brazil to take one of the 10 non-permanent seats at the Security Council for 2010-2011. Non-permanent member of SC would have no veto power.
"We support a reformed UN Security Council and for Brazil to have a permanent seat," Ahmadinejad said and also added that the Security Council has been a failure due to the right of veto for a small number of countries, making it as a main source of insecurity on the international scene.
Iran and Brazil have called for strengthening of their mutual ties in trades, scientific and cultural exchanges.
