Tehran, Nov. 24, 09 (Hamsayeh.Net) - Scientists at Iran’s nuclear research laboratories have produced two important radioisotopes for use in medical treatments.
Speaking to reporters yesterday, the Deputy Director for the Atomic Organization Mohammad Qannadi said, ‘The two new radioisotopes are rhenium-186 and samarium-153.’ The revelation seals Iran’s claims on peaceful nature of its nuclear research program.
Qannadi who is also one of the country’s leading scientists announced that all conducted clinical trials on the newly produced radioisotopes were positive.
Mass production of the new radioisotopes would begin as soon as the Health Ministry issues necessary licenses. Qannadi said both radioisotopes have uses in the treatment of cancer patients.
Iran produces most of its own radioisotopes for medical purposes at Tehran’s 5MW nuclear reactor, which was supplied by the United States before the Islamic Revolution in 1979.
The isotopes of an element are all the atoms that have in their nucleus the number of protons (atomic number) corresponding to the chemical behavior of that element. An isotope that is radioactive is called a radioisotope or radionuclide.
