Nov. 24, 09 (Hamsayeh.Net) - The White House today announced that US President Obama would deliver a speech to the nation next week about his decision on sending reinforcement troops to Afghanistan.
After months of deliberations it seems the US President has finally decided on adding to the number of troops already in Afghanistan. According to some reports, Obama would unveil a new Afghan strategy aimed at escalating the offensive power of the multinational force against the Taliban.
NATO military strategists and US hope their new escalation strategy will put end to years of fighting in Afghanistan and that would bring a Western style democracy to the war-torn nation.
It took nearly three month for Washington to make a decision on sending more troops to Afghanistan. Though US officials have not revealed their numbers, it is estimated that over 30,000 more troops will be dispatched to that country in the near future and it appears that no timeline has yet been set for an eventual withdrawal. Details of the announcement will not be made public until next week.
US General McChrystal initially asked for 20,000 additional troops but soon changed the figure to as many as 80,000 men.
Military analysts estimate that the US and multinational forces would need at least 800,000 troops in Afghanistan only to maintain certain levels of tranquility. Still, so many troops would not be enough to win the war against the Taliban.
