Nov. 24, 09 (Hamsayeh.Net) - Chief Nuclear negotiator says the West should provide ‘concrete’ guarantees for its proposed nuclear fuel supply to be used in Tehran’s 5 MW research reactor, which produces all of the country’s radioisotopes for medical use.
Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Saeed Jalili told reporters yesterday on Iran’s concerns for nuclear fuel supply from other countries and that if such guarantees can’t be given then Iran would produce the needed fuel indigenously.
‘If concrete guarantees are not provided, we have other options which we will move forward with.’ Jalili said. The top nuclear negotiator also added that the issue of fuel supply for Tehran's reactor wasn’t a political issue and had nothing to do with the ongoing talks with the group of 5+1 countries.
Jalili expressed certain levels of ‘distrust’ when it came to relying on Western suppliers of nuclear fuel at the time it should need it. ‘Iran has other options.’ He said.
Iran and the group of 5+1 resumed their negotiations on the 1st October in Geneva. Western countries provided Iran with a nuclear fuel exchange proposal. The proposal was based on Iran’s sending a large portion of its stored low enriched uranium to Russia and then to France for further processing. There, however, was no guarantee on how or when Iran could receive the higher enriched uranium.
The US, using its customary pressure tactics, says there can be no alteration on that proposal and Iran must accept the offer.
According to Jalili, the negotiations were expected to resume but an ‘internal’ disagreement among the six major powers has shifted the timetable.
