UAE Claim On Three Iranian Islands are baseless and Unfounded
Nov. 26, 09 (Hamsayeh.Net) - Former Iranian deputy foreign minister fully dismissed recent claims by a leading UAE official on the three Iranian islands located in the Persian Gulf near the strategic Straight of Hormuz.
Abbas Maleki in a conference on Persian Gulf security said the three islands have, from the earliest times in history, belonged to Iran and this fact has also been reflected in a memorandum of understanding signed between Iran and Britain in the past. ‘The UAE claims on the islands were baseless and unfounded.’ He said.
From time to time some UAE officials repeat their baseless claims on the Iranian islands of AbuMousa, lesser and greater Tunbs in the Persian Gulf. In one their latest claims an UAE official accused Iran of having ‘occupied the islands.’
Abumousa, the lesser and greater Tunbs are small tiny islands located at the mouth of the Persian Gulf close to the strategic waterway where nearly half of the world’s oil and gas needs make their daily transits by means of very large super-tankers.
The UAE gained its own nationhood in December 02, 1971 from Britain. Before 1971, the UAE was known as the Trucial States or Trucial Oman, in reference to a 19th-century truce between the United Kingdom and several Arab Sheikhs. The name Pirate Coast was also used in reference to the area's emirates in the 18th to early 20th century. [1]
Tehran always made it clear that the islands are and will remain an integral and permanent part of Iran’s territory.
