Russia Confirmed the Deal Was On
Nov. 28, 09 (Hamsayeh.Net) - In a surprise turn of events, Russia assured Iran of its intention to honour the deal already signed with Iran over the delivery of S-300 missile system to Tehran.
Iran’s Ambassador to Moscow Seyed Mahmoud Reza Sajadi confirmed that Russia would honour its defence contracts with Iran. ‘We have heard reports on Russia not wanting to deliver these systems to Iran, but we asked the Russian side and they denied it.’ Sajadi said.
‘The delivery deadline has already passed, but the Russian side has cited technical problems which it is working to fix and we feel that this question will be resolved in the space of one to two months.’ The Ambassador added.
A top Iranian military official said the Russia side was late over six months into the delivery of the system. He also said that Iranian forces would not depend on such weapons to defend the country’s nuclear sites.
Russian manufactured S-300 missile system is an older generation of this type of weapon designed to shoot down incoming aircrafts and missiles at 200 km in mid-air. It has high degree of reliability and this fact makes Iran’s already nervous enemies even more nervous, in case the country’s defence forces are equipped with such system.
With respect to Iran’s purchase of the system Sajadi said, ‘the contract for the delivery of the Russian S-300 systems is signed. These are defence weapons, intended particularly for the defence of Bushehr (nuclear power plant) which Russian specialists are building in southern Iran.’
