Houthis seized Saudi firearms and ammunition
Dec. 03, 09 (Hamsayeh.Net) - Saudi Arabian military in now openly engaged in battles against Houti resistant fighters in Saada province of Yemen. Saudi jets conducted aerial bombardment of northwestern parts of Yemen hoping to crush Houthi positions.
But according to some reports the Houti fighters have succeeded at repelling a Saudi ground invasion last Tuesday and the latest aerial bombardment caused minor damages to their positions. The Houthis also claim they have seized large quantities of Saudi firearms and ammunition in the course of their latest offensive.
Saudi Arabia saying it is protecting its border regions from Houthi incursions entered the conflict in Yemen. The Houthis however say they have no interest in opening up another front against Saudi Arabia as they are only fighting against the corrupt government in Yemen. Houthis who are Shias say the government in Sana’a has ignored their plight for so long that they had no choice but to fight against injustices.
Houthis say Saudi Arabia is backing the government of Yemen against them. Saudi King Abdullah also visited the region where the battles are taking place.
In August, Yemen army launched a military incursion dubbed Operation Scorched Earth, in the northwestern province of Saada in order to crush the resistant groups in the area. Saudi Army entered the foray not long after the fighting began.
The Saudi air force has further complicated the armed conflict by launching its own operations against the Shia resistance fighters. Houthis claim Saudi jets drop banned phosphorous bombs similar to what the Israelis used during the 33-day war in Gaza, on their villagers.
