Saudi Arabia Slammed for Its heavy handed Policy Against the Houthis
Tehran, Dec. 05, 09 (Hamsayeh.Net) - Ali Larijani , Iran’s Parliament Speaker slammed Saudi government’s heavy handed tactics regarding its poor border region in Saada,Yemen by launching an offensive against the people of that region.
Larijani described the situation in northern Yemen chaotic and questioned the role of Saudis behind the military offensive into that part of Yemen, which had exacerbated the humanitarian situation there.
’An unfair conflict has arisen in Yemen but I wonder how [our] Saudi brothers who are Muslim do such a thing. They are in fact … killing Muslims,’ Larijani said and added that the government in Riyadh should avoid inciting divisions among Muslims and if they have rockets then why don’t they use them against Israel but instead are dropping them on other Muslims.
The Speaker also said that this was not the first time Saudi’s act in a way that contradicted Islamic teachings. He mentioned the Iran-Iraq war when Saudi Arabia gave financial support to the government of Saddam Hussein. ‘We told them (Saudis) not to collaborate with Saddam's dictatorial regime but they retorted that Iraqis were Arabs. Why is it that now you don't intervene to help in Lebanon and Palestine considering that they are mostly Sunni (Arabs)? Why don't you confront the Zionist regime?’ he questioned.
The fighting in northern Yemen is about the plight of Houthi people who have deep rooted grievances of being historically marginalized by the government of Yemen.
Last August, Sanaa launched a military offensive named Scorched Earth against the Houthis but hasn’t been able to crush the uprising. Saudi Arabia entered the scene clearly supporting the government in Yemen against Houthis. Riyadh sent its army to fight alongside the border with Yemen and Saudi airplanes continue bombardment of villages. Thousands of local people in the area have been displaced by the bombardment.
