There Are No Military Solutions to the Nuclear Issue
Dec. 06, 09 (Hamsayeh.Net) - Mohamad ElBaradei, the former head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) after recently retiring from his post warned against the Israeli government’s too frequently announced plans to attack Iran’s nuclear sites.
‘This is absolutely the worst thing that can happen.’ ElBaradei told the Washington Post in a recent interview. ‘There is no military solution . . . if a country is bombed, you give them every reason - with the support of everybody in the country and outside the country - to go for nuclear weapons, and nobody can even blame them,’ said ElBaradei.
Israel and United States are working hard to increase diplomatic pressures on Iran by setting up another deadline before this year’s end. The move would most likely just serve as another symbolic gesture to make Iran scared so hopefully Tehran would hand over its nuclear program to Western powers.
In particular, the Israeli government has already designated the end of this year as their final chance to stop Iran from developing an indigenous nuclear program at a level known as ‘the point of no return.’
The IAEA board of governors last week passed a biased resolution against Iran, but ElBaradei down played its overall importance by saying the resolution should not be seen as a sign that diplomacy with Iran has reached a dead end.
’The resolution was an act of frustration, but there was no mention by anyone that this was the end of the fight for a diplomatic solution. The same people who sponsored the resolution continue to talk about the importance of reaching out to Iran, he said.
ElBaradei described Bush’s ignorance on Iran like a big obstacle that created an awkward situation, since the former US President named Iran as a member of an ‘axis of evil’ and at the same time asked Iran to give up its nuclear program. ‘You cannot describe a country as part of an "axis of evil" and then turn around and expect them to have trust or behave in certain ways,’ he asserted.
