De Facto Government Asked Zelaya to Sign a Resignation Statement
Tegucigalpa, Dec. 11, 09 (Hamsayeh.Net) - Events in Honduras took a new turn yesterday when de facto government headed by Roberto Micheletti prevented Jose Manuel Zelaya, the popular President of Honduras that was ousted from office by a military coup in June, from leaving the country for Mexico.
Latin American nations condemned de facto government’s latest move as they have already said they will not recognize the newly elected government of Profirio Lobo who is reportedly a US backed businessman.
According to news reports, a plane took off from Mexico City yesterday to land at the airport in Tegucigalpa – Honduran Capital – to bring Zelaya who is residing at the Brazilian Embassy to Mexico for a few days until he is to attend a conference next week in Havana. But at the last minute, the military coup leaders seem to have asked Zelaya to sign a statement saying he will not seek a reinstatement as the head of government in Honduras, Reuters quoted local newspapers as saying.
‘There was a letter that they wanted me to sign and I refused to sign it. It was to renounce the mandate which the people gave me to be president until January 27,’ Zelaya told Radio Globo.
Meanwhile, Brazilian Foreign Minister Celso Amorim said it was totally unacceptable that de facto government should impose conditions on Zelaya’s departures. The FM also blamed the United States for being too lenient on the Honduran military de facto government.
All Latin American countries except a small number that receive supports from Washington refuse to recognize the new government in Honduras. U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton however praised president-elect Profirio Lobo for his reconciliation efforts.
