No Need To Draw Rash Judgments: China and Russia UN Ambassadors Urge
Dec. 11, 09 (Hamsayeh.Net) - The UN Security Council began a meeting on Thursday and Ambassador from member countries presented their viewpoints regarding the Iranian nuclear program. The US, British and French ambassadors used the occasion to warn Iran on implementation of more sanctions unless Tehran complies with their demands.
French ambassador Garaud Araud said, ‘There is no longer any reason to wait, if Iran continues to do everything it can to violate five Security Council resolutions; if it continues to refuse the slightest confidence measures, to refuse dialogue, transparency after the major revelations that have just been made, we must draw all of the necessary conclusions and that means we must move on to a new resolution involving sanctions.’
Susan Rice US’ ambassador the UN said that engagement cannot be a one-way street and Tehran must also show cooperation and address the serious issues associated with its nuclear program.
It was now UK ambassador's turn to warn Tehran. Mark Grant, said, ‘Iran has taken every opportunity to delay and protract our efforts to reach agreement on this issue. The only reasonable conclusion that can be drawn is that their responses are calculated to buy time and to try to divide the international community.’
The Trio warned Tehran - as their last ultimatum - that it must comply with their demands or face more sanctions including economic ones.
Iranian UN Mission defended the country’s nuclear program by issuing a statement in which called the assertions ‘baseless and unfounded’ and reassured the members saying Iran remains fully committed to NPT and international rules and regulations concerning non-proliferation.
‘"Iran has repeatedly, clearly expressed its position that nuclear weapons have no place in its military doctrine, therefore, Iran's nuclear activities are, and have always been, for peaceful purposes, and thus pose no threat whatsoever to the other states' security.’ the statement read.
The US, British and French harsh statements were met by more rational and logical stances from China and Russia. Both of these nations’ ambassador to the UNSC voiced patience and dialogue as the best way to address the issue.
Chinese ambassador to UN Zhang Yesui said, ‘There is still space for the diplomatic efforts of the international community to resume talks. It may require more time and patience on all parts.’
Followed by the Russian ambassador Vitaly Churkin, who urged more ‘patience’ and ‘restrain’ from all parties involved.
Iran sits atop some of the world richest hydrocarbon reserves as well as it enjoys a strategic location over the Straight of Hormuz where most of the world’s oil is transported through. The country claims it needs peaceful nuclear energy to produce electricity and thus reduce dependence on burning valuable and finite commodities such as oil or gas to produce electricity.
