Threats of Sanctions Against A Determined Nation Is Doomed To Failure
Dec. 14, 09 (Hamsayeh.Net) - Iranian official says the era of threats and sanctions against other nations is a bygone concept and particularly such threats, which are a legacy of the Bush administration, have proven to be futile against Iran.
Iran’s Foreign Minister Manuchehr Mottaki on a visit to Bahrain expressed these words in response to recent remarks made by British Prime Minister and the US Secretary of State regarding the need to increase economic sanctions against Iran.
Western powers are calling for increasing economic pressures on Tehran in order to force a nuclear swap deal for Iran to send most of its low enriched uranium to other countries.
Mottaki told Mehr News Agency in Manama, ‘Presumably Western politicians are used to repeat such a language, employing such a language towards a nation who is determined to safeguard its native technological achievements is doomed to failure.’
Last Friday, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton issued a fresh warning to Latin American nations over building stronger ties with Iran. She said trying to get too close to Tehran was a really bad idea. She also criticized several Latin American countries for following their own national agendas different from what Washington considers the norm.
Mottaki in turn described the American’s behavior in direct contrast to the international treaties like the 1961 Vienna Convention on diplomatic relations.
On Clinton’s remarks, Mottaki said, “Americans’ behavior” is in stark contrast to the international treaties such as the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations. ‘The fact that Clinton analyzes countries’ bilateral relations suspiciously while employing threatening tactics is against diplomatic and professional principles.’ MNA reported Mottaki as saying.
Mottaki added that according to international conventions, no member of the UN has the right to prevent other countries from establishing mutual ties, noting the fact that when foreigners meddle in other countries affairs is because they seek to take advantage of it by dividing and destabilizing the situation.
